Tågteve (installation)
Twenty-eight subtitle signs placed at intervals along the railway between Stockholm and Uppsala. Passengers travelling between the two cities encountered a dialogue about travel, landscape and transience unfolding sign by sign outside the window — readable only at train speed. The work brought together several lines of inquiry that have remained central: the Nordic landscape in motion and transformation, text as a spatial and physical medium, and the viewer’s body as a necessary condition for the work to exist.
‘What were you thinking about?’, I ask, but I don’t get an answer and when I look out the window I see my words passing by. Under the power lines, in the landscape outside that is an image of landscape. Large letters for everyone to see and read. At first I feel exposed. Exhibited. From a distance it looks exactly like my thought. It looks like something within. But we pass it, leave it behind. It doesn’t grab hold of any of us, doesn’t demand an answer or more words. The train rolls on and on either side of it the world arises from the earth, the text from silence. ‘I haven’t seen everything yet.’
